The organization's services are geared toward empowering consumers with physical and/or cognitive disabilities to have the supports the need to live in their homes,and enable them to participate in community life to the extent that they would like.

Opportunities: Assistance with special events and projects,including health fair booths,special event publicity,event committees,and more. In addition,volunteers may assist with office administration tasks,such as filing,preparing mailings,word processing or database entry.

2. Action for Animals Humane Society

About Us: Action for Animals is a non-profit,non-governmental humane organization. Its primary function is to care for strayed,abused,and abandoned animals in Westmoreland County by providing temporary shelter,medical care,feeding,training,and,eventually,placement in permanent homes. Action for Animals is a "no kill" shelter and,therefore,relies completely on volunteers,donations,and fundraisers to operate.

Opportunities: Volunteers are needed to help walk dogs,play with animals,raise money,assist with daily chores around the shelter,and help with rabies clinics. We offer volunteer orientations for new volunteers every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at 2 p.m. Call the shelter to schedule your volunteer orientation ahead of time.

About Us: The Alle-Kiski HOPE Center (HOPE) is a domestic violence agency in the southwestern PA area. HOPE's mission is the safe elimination of domestic violence through intervention,prevention,and collaboration. The services we provide include: 24-hour hotline,30-day shelter,transition house where victims can stay for up to a year,counseling,court system advocate,and prevention programs to the community,as well as schools from K - College.

Opportunities: We require our volunteers to go through a 45-hour training session. Our volunteers can work in any of the areas that we provide service,as well as child care,office work,and maintenance.

Opportunities: Volunteers are needed to assist with emergency services,armed forces services,blood drives,office support,fire responding,fundraising,teaching health and safety programs,special events,and youth community service projects. Our approach empowers persons with disabilities by providing quality programs,services,and supports.

Opportunities: Volunteers are needed to help with monthly fundraisers and special events,such as our "Night at the Races," "Bingo Bash," and "Breakfast with Santa." Volunteers also assist with our monthly social leisure events,including dances and various outings. Clerical assistance is needed with bulk mailings,data entry,and ticket sales and coordination. Lastly,volunteers can assist with large and small labor projects,including mulching,weeding,landscaping,gardening,and painting,among other things. We do offer a "Friendship Project" in which volunteers spend time getting to know some of the people supported by The Arc's programs.

About Us: Big Brothers & Big Sisters of the Laurel Region matches,monitors,and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships between caring adults and at-risk youth in order to help children reach their fullest potential. These mentoring relationships often fall under site-based mentoring (such as "Lunch Buddies" or "After-School Tutoring") or community-based mentoring.
